Grand Theft Auto VI unlocks on November 19, 2026. To be playing the moment it does — with no launch-day download wait and no spoilers ruining the opening — sort five things ahead of time: preorder your edition, preload from November 12, free up storage, secure your account, and set up spoiler protection. This guide is spoiler-free.
1. Preorder and pick your edition
Decide between the Standard and Ultimate editions and preorder from an official or authorized retailer. Our editions comparison breaks down what each includes, and the price guidecovers the US cost plus how to avoid too-good-to-be-true “deals.” A digital preorder is what enables preloading; see where and how to preorder.
2. Preload from November 12
Preloading downloads the full game in advance so it’s ready to play the instant it unlocks. It opens one week before launch, on November 12, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Full details are on the preload guide. Physical buyers redeem the code in the box, then preload the same way.
3. Free up storage
Clear space before November 12 so the preload finishes without stalling. Delete a couple of large games you’re not actively playing and you can always reinstall them later.
4. Secure your account
Launch windows are prime time for phishing and account theft. Turn on two-factor authentication for your PlayStation or Xbox account, make sure your payment method and console are up to date, and never enter your login on a site that promises early access or a free copy — those are scams.
5. Set up spoiler protection
If you want the story fresh, mute keywords like “GTA 6,” “GTA VI,” and character names on your social apps for launch week, and be cautious with video thumbnails and comment sections. We keep this site spoiler-safe, but the wider internet won’t be.
6. Confirm your platform
GTA VI launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. If you’re a PC player, read where things stand on the PC release before making plans.
